Plural Africa
Supporting transparency in governance, one country at a time.
Within Nigeria, we address the challenges of fragmented and inaccessible policy data, in the Nigerian state legislatures and the Nigerian National Assembly.
In Nigeria and many African countries, access to legislative data remains fragmented and largely inaccessible.
A report by the African Development Bank highlights that only 7% of African countries provide open access to legislative information online.
This lack of transparency hampers civic engagement, as citizens and advocacy groups struggle to obtain the data necessary to hold lawmakers accountable and participate meaningfully in the democratic process.
We envision a bold future for Africa
Our vision is to foster transparency, accountability, and civic engagement in African democracies by providing a comprehensive, accessible, and open platform for legislative data.
By curating and presenting legislative data from multiple African jurisdictions, we aim to empower citizens, policymakers, and civil society organizations to engage more effectively with the democratic process.
Similar to the work we’ve successfully completed in North America, our vision is to build atop the work we’ve already completed in Nigeria by creating additional civic tools, growing the open source community, and adding more policy data.
As we’ve seen in North America, we can rapidly increase transparency and radically improve public participation by expanding free and open source public policy software and tools. We aim to empower citizens, policymakers, and civil society organizations to engage more effectively with the democratic process.
Our Work
We aim to centralize this information because legislative data is scattered across various platforms.
We are building an accessible, open-source platform that can empower over 200 million citizens to track legislation, understand governmental actions, and engage with their representatives more effectively.
Our Objectives
Establish system for curating legislative data
Develop digital database encompassing at least 30,000 legislative records annually
Create and maintain an open data platform for the public to access and track legislation and identify their lawmakers.
Develop legislative data API capable of handling 100,000 requests per month
Create a first-layer database and technology infrastructure to serve as the backbone for diverse civic and gov tech solutions.
Train 500 tech-enabled civic actors on utilizing the technology
Helping to achieve global sustainability goals & impact
Our goals align with UN Sustainable Development Goals
Enhance transparency and Accountability
By providing open access to legislative data, the platform will enhance government transparency and accountability.
Civic Engagement
Citizens and organizations will have the tools to actively participate in the legislative process, fostering a more engaged and informed electorate.
Replication and Scalability
The success of this project in Nigeria will provide a model for expanding the platform across the continent, amplifying its impact.
